Cooling your home the smart way
Small changes to how you choose to cool your home can make a big difference to your energy bill.
Shut out the sun
- During hot summer days keep your curtains or blinds closed, this will block the sun’s heat and reduce the need to cool your home
- Re-open your curtains at night, to allow the cooler outside air to circulate inside
- Applying heat reducing film to your windows which can help keep your home cool in the summer and works in reverse to keep it warmer in the winter too
Turn of your appliances
- Most appliances in our home produce a lot of excess heat, reducing the amount we use our ovens, tumble dryers, dishwashers or simply turning lights off can help to keep our homes cool
Natural lighting
- Allowing natural lighting to illuminate your rooms during the day and avoiding using electric bulbs which produce a lot of heat
